The study reveals a concerning prevalence of domestic violence among women. According to the findings:
- 37% of women have experienced domestic violence at some point in their lives.
- 28.9% of women were currently experiencing domestic violence.
- Among 880 surveyed women, 33.2% had experienced violence from their husbands at least once, and 25.6% were currently facing such violence.
On a global scale, 1 in 3 married women has suffered physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner.
The statistics raise critical questions about societal values. In a culture that venerates goddesses like Durga, Kali, and Saraswati as symbols of power and reverence, the persistence of such violence against women is contradictory. The practice of regarding a girl child as “Parayaa Dhan” (someone else’s property) perpetuates her status as an outsider, enabling a culture of discrimination, exploitation, and abuse throughout her life.
This disparity prompts reflection: Can a society truly claim to be cultured and progressive when a significant portion of its population endures violence and subjugation?
